About Emma: Winning the overall IAAM individual cross country championship once is an accomplishment. Defending that title by finishing 42 seconds ahead of St. Timothy’s runner-up Genevieve Cowan was even more of an achievement on a hot day at Shawan Downs in Cockeysville as Emma helped Severn to finish behind champion John Carroll in the B Conference team chase.

Emma said that she hadn’t raced in a month due to a foot injury, although she said the pain wasn’t bothering her on Tuesday. She also wisely started preparing on Monday by hydrating, given the unusually warm weather predicted for Tuesday’s meet.

Emma said that she and JC senior Maddie Wassin were running together until the 2-mile mark when the Severn star bolted to the front and pulled away for good.
