Mount de Sales Academy defended its outdoor track championship against McDonogh in a battle of titans on Saturday afternoon.
“We knew it was going to be a close battle with McDonogh, but the last six events in particular the girls stepped up and we were a powerhouse,” MDSA coach Steve Webber said. “We scored points in every single event and it was a great team effort.”
The Sailors held a comfortable lead after day one, but the points swung heavily toward the Eagles after the Saturday morning field events.
McDonogh scored 16 points in long jump with Jada Seaman and Nyla Cherry finishing first and third. In the discus, AJ Davis, Dara Balter, and Kaden Olivier finished first, third, and fourth to score 21 points and overtake de Sales.
In the afternoon, Seaman set the league record in the 100 dash, as the Eagles picked up 17 total points in the event. De Sales mounted its comeback with the 1,600, however.
Juliette Whittaker, Samantha Facius, and Elizabeth Freymann finished first, second, and seventh to net 12 points. Following the 1,600, the Sailors won the 4x100 with a strong anchor leg from Edeline Davies.
Bella Whittaker then set the league record in the 400 dash, running 54.71 In the 300 hurdles, Lexi Hamilton, Keelin Becker, and Claire Nilan finished second, third, and eighth for the Sailors.
After 15 of 18 events Mount de Sales held a tenuous two-point lead before continuing the hot streak in the 800. Juliette Whittaker set a league record running 2:10.16, while Facius finished fourth, giving the Sailors an eleven point lead.
While the 4x400 is always the last event, the 200 determined if the 4x400 would have any meaning.
Seaman set another league record with a 24.12 to take the win, but Bella Whittaker and Edeline Davies finished second and third, giving the Sailors a 15-point lead, sealing the deal.
In the B Conference, Roland Park Country School captured its first title by nearly 100 points.
“This team worked hard all season and they clearly showed they deserved the championship with their great attitude and effort all season,” RPCS coach Jason Ruby said. Congratulation to all the schools and the competitors. Thank you to all the coaches for all their hard work.”
The Reds scored in every event while winning eight of them.
Their top performance were in the 100 with Tavianne Maultsby, Amani Green, and Georgia Szoke finishing second, third, and fourth; the triple jump with Solai Cockrell, Emilia Current, and Brylen Hatcher finishing second, third, and fifth; and the 400 with Sophia Ellerkmann and Alayna Gibson finishing first and second.
Alayna Gibson completed was the star of the show, claiming the 800, 1,600, and 3,200, while finishing second in the 400.
Pallotti finished second overall, for their its best-ever team finish.
The Panthers standouts included Kamlyn Padgham, the 100 and 200 champ; Delaina Callaway, tops in the high jump and runner-up in long jump; and Cynthia Roberts and Orianna Moore, first and second in the shot put.
